Introducing Fluoride Varnish
Effective January 1, 2011, Pediatric Care Specialists will be providing fluoride varnish treatments to our patients. Treatments will be offered at your child’s well visit starting at 1 year of age.
What is fluoride varnish?
Fluoride varnish is a highly concentrated form of fluoride which is applied to the tooth’s surface by a trained health care professional. It is not permanent. However, due to its adherent nature, it is able to stay on contact with the tooth’s surface for several hours.
Fluoride varnish helps prevent tooth decay, remineralises the tooth’s surface and treats dentine hypersensitivity.
Fluoride varnish will work in conjunction with your child’s current regimens such as fluoridation of water source, fluoride supplements and fluoride tooth pastes and mouth washes.
How is fluoride varnish applied and how long will it last?
Fluoride varnish is applied with a small brush directly to all surfaces of each tooth. The varnish will set quickly with contact of saliva. You will then see a thin coating over each tooth. Your child will be instructed to wait 6 hours to brush their teeth. At that point, the remaining varnish will be easily removed from teeth, restoring the same shine and brightness as before the treatment.
The fluoride varnish will need to be reapplied every 6 months for low risk patients and every 3 months for high risk patients.
